SUFY Part 2: MOVE like you LOVE yourself

Today is the day for you to truly show up

for yourself.

MOVE like you LOVE yourself!

So did you do it?!

(Go back and see SUFY post 1 if you have no idea what I’m talking about!)

Did you show up for yourself this past week?

Did you find more space for yourself?

Did you find your heart space and connect with it?

I hope so.

But I thought it may be time to dive a little deeper into what it means to show up for yourself. But REALLY show up for yourself – like you LOVE yourself.

(Self love is key baby!)

So, starting today, I am bringing you a little series that I’m calling the

“Show up for yourself” series.

Each week, I’m going to invite you to focus on a different area of your life. An area in which you can show up for yourself, like you LOVE yourself.

The emphasis being on the LOVE. I want everything that you do for that week to come from a place of love, not obligation, not guilt or shame, but LOVE.

(As mentioned, this is an invitation, there are no requirements here.)

So, for the next week the focus is going to be on where most people start when they want to change something in their life, MOVEMENT.

For the next week, each morning, I want you to take a few deep breaths, eyes closed, and say to yourself, embodying the words as you say them:

“Today I am going to move like I love myself!”

(You can even write it around your home or put it as an alert on your phone!)

Ok, so let’s have a quick chat about what that might look like for you…

It all depends on where you are starting from.

If you don’t move much, then the movement may be more gentle in the beginning.

If you love movement and do it regularly, then the emphasis will be on appreciation and love of the movement you already do, or choosing other ways to move that are from the heart, that light you up.

So firstly, identify where you’re at.

Now regardless of where you are at, I want you to move like you love yourself EVERY SINGLE DAY for the next week.

This could include:

  • Walking or riding a bike instead of driving a car
  • Taking the stairs rather than a lift
  • Going for a daily walk.
  • Going for a walk on your lunch break (even if it’s just for 5 mins)
  • If you’re sitting at a computer all day, setting an hourly alarm on your phone and stopping to move or stretch when the alarm sounds
  • Working out (at home or at a gym)
  • Taking a class (anything that requires you to move your body)
  • Dancing and singing
  • Playing a sport or game you love
  • Yoga
  • Breathwork (yep, we are counting moving your breath/lungs)
  • Housework
  • Gardening
  • Playing with your kids or pets
  • Adding movement into any activity you are doing (doing 20 squats in the ad breaks of your favourite tv show)

And of course, anything else you can think of that means moving your body to you.

So how do we bring the LOVE into the movement?

This is where planning and awareness come in.

Practically or planning wise, you can be organised and schedule your movement for the week into your calendar (best for people who don’t move much cause you’ve got to build the mental discipline).

Or you can decide on the day, in the moment what feels right (best for those who love to move and already have the mental discipline).

You can do something at the same time each day…

Or look at your schedule and see the gaps and consciously decide to put something in that free spot.

The things you choose to do are things you enjoy in general but even if you get to that day and don’t feel like doing what you’ve scheduled in (say, a gym class), it’s important that you commit and follow through.

This is where the LOVE comes in.

When you don’t want to do something, notice how it makes you feel.

Notice the resistance and where you feel it in your body.

Close your eyes, take a few deeps breaths, connect with you heart and remember why you are taking the time to move your body today.

And then, as Mel Robbins says, just count 5,4,3,2,1 and get up and do it!

Don’t think, just do.

And remember this (call it tough love if you will):

No-one can do this for you.

You have to take responsibility for yourself.

If you don’t like the way something is, only you can change it.

No-one is coming to push you off the couch and make you move.

BUT remember, there’s no space for guilt or shame here.

Let go of the judgment. I want you to transfer the judgment into love.

The action you’re about to take (going for a walk etc), is something you’re doing because you care about yourself enough to take the time for yourself. Plus it’s something you know you like to do, so why deny your body the joy and blessing of moving it?

It’s time to “Move like you LOVE yourself”
